Halloween in Dublin

Spotted over the weekend was this boy, among a bunch of others, gathering “fuel” for their Halloween bonfire which is a very common sight at this time of year. I’ve spoken to a lot of my Irish friends about this little cultural phenomenon — they all say that they scoured the area when they were kids to stockpile wood and debris for their bonfires but they claim theirs were small and contained. It seems that these bonfires are anything but small and contained from what I’ve read and also seen firsthand.

I guess the local council has caught on by the looks of this Irish Times article. On one hand, I think it looks like a lot of fun and the 13-year-old me would have been right in there but on the other hand, I hate seeing the asphalt sidewalks in my local parks burnt out on the 1st November — just seems like it might go a bit too far! And now I just sound really, really old…
