I’m really loving the look of Suzani fabric lately and it could solve a big design problem for me. I was keen to find out more about the origins but when I did my research, I didn’t realize the history was as rich as it is — now it makes me love it even more. Suzani is a tribal textile with roots from Persia and central Asian countries. It gets its name from the Persian word for needle.
Suzanis were traditionally made by Central Asian brides as part of their dowry and then presented to the groom on the wedding day. And the botah motif, shaped like a teardrop and is considered to be a version of the “tree of life” design.
